*Sappho Not a goddess or mythical character, but a real archaic Greek poet from Lesbos, active around the 6th century BCE. She wrote intensely personal poetry about love, desire, beauty, longing and relationships between women. Much of her work has been lost, but her surviving fragments made her one of antiquity’s most influential lesbian poets. The word “Sapphic” comes from her name, while “lesbian” comes from Lesbos, the Greek island where she lived and where her poetry celebrated love between women.
