*Iphis A fascinating figure from Ovid's Metamorphoses. Born female in a society where her mother feared she could not raise a daughter, Iphis was raised as a boy. Iphis falls in love with Ianthe, but their marriage seems impossible because both are believed to be women. The goddess Isis ultimately transforms Iphis into a man, allowing the marriage. The story explores gender, identity, desire and social expectations.
