Calypso (Καλυψώ)
A beautiful and powerful nymph who lived alone on the island of Ogygia. In Homer’s Odyssey, she shelters Odysseus after his shipwreck and falls in love with him, keeping him on the island for several years. She offers him immortality if he stays with her, but Odysseus longs to return home to Penelope. Calypso is associated with female desire, independence, seduction, isolation, and the tension between love and freedom. Her name is linked to the Greek kalyptō, meaning “to conceal” or “to hide.”
